Share Academy to MUPI – 2012 to 2016

Share Academy is a partnership project between University of the Arts London (UAL), University College London (UCL) and the London Museums Group.

The partnership came together through a shared belief in the potential for mutually beneficial collaboration between Higher Education and museums. Share Academy has been researching, supporting and promoting partnership working between the two sectors since 2012 with the support of Arts Council England (ACE).

The story so far

A pilot project, conducted between October 2012 and March 2013, explored the challenges and benefits of partnership working. The pilot produced a feasibility study outlining the potential for collaboration.

Between March 2013 and April 2015 the Share Academy team spent two years brokering, funding and evaluating cross-sector collaborations in the London region. Further information on our previous projects can be found in the Legacy Book

In 2016 Share Academy ran a series of regional workshops for museum staff and volunteers across England to share our learning and expertise around collaborative practice. It also developed a proof of concept digital resource to link museums and museum collections with universities.

The research of Share Academy explored the long term and dynamic impacts of museum and university partnerships, working with and for local ecologies.

Share Academy reports, advice and guidance on museum and university collaborations can be downloaded on resources page.

In Autumn of 2016 the Arts Council England Museum Resilience Fund awarded the Museum-University Partnership Initiative (MUPI) a grant to connect museums with academics across England, and help develop sustainable networks of museums and universities.  This partnership project is led by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE), with Paddy McNulty Associates and Share Academy as project partners.
